I came across this infographic through a colleague who is a rather dapper dresser. His remark to me “no brown shoes with black suit prohibition”. He was joking of course. While Rule #6 is perhaps one way to ensure you only wear a brown shoes with a blue suit – it’s by no means foolproof.
Unless you have a dapper-eyed girlfriend or wife – most unattached men look like hobos who recently were ejected from Goodwill. This is in part due to the fact that “the art of Manliness” seems less in fashion these days – and thus rules such as ensuring a straight gig-line, how to conduct a spit-polish, or do a simple straight razor shave, are not talked about among men. Enter the idea then of Fashion Stork – one of many “outfit of the month” clubs that send the would be gentlemen what he needs to not look like a schnook.
This infographic is pretty good along the lines of their business – it’s a simple set of rules that nearly every well-dressed man knows almost instinctively. It may seem silly to make an infographic out of such basic material – but, it’s simple things like this that are often the hardest to do well. And as a personal issue of debate on rule #12 – I routinely wear a vintage “mad men” style black and white houndstooth sportcoat from the 1960’s with black trousers from my tuxedo… it’s really the only thing that goes with it.
